Haley Reinhart Has 'A Lot Of Faith' In Post-'American Idol' Career

'I'm really, really lucky to have some strong women that have powerful voices that are coming back into the scene,' she tells MTV News.
By Gil Kaufman

Haley Reinhart had a memorably bumpy ride on the just-completed 10th season of link type="content" id="1486475">"American Idol." She fell down during her final performance night, got dinged by judge Randy Jackson on a number of occasions in an otherwise-sunshiny season of high praise for most of the top finishers and almost had to take the stage at the last minute as a finale sub when eventual runner-up Lauren Alaina suffered a vocal-cord malady on the last performance night.

So is Haley bitter about her seesaw season or worried that her third-place finish means her sultry blues sound didn't click with America?

"I'm really, really lucky to have some strong women that have powerful voices that are coming back into the scene ... that's very inspiring, because that's what I've wanted to do for a while," she told MTV News on Tuesday (May 31), mentioning such icons as Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Grammy-winning jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding, Duffy and Janelle Monáe as her inspirations.

"All these chicks have a really, really cool, unique sound, and I'm really thankful that this is coming about, because it's the right time for me right now. It's happening, and I have so much throwback that's come along with me, and it seems like it might be a stretch to get there, but especially now with this new wave coming through, with this raw, refreshing good musicality being provided, I have really good feelings and a lot of faith."

Reinhart is already looking ahead to the time after this summer's "Idol" tour, when she hopes to put out some of the funky, R&B/soul style of music she likes to write. "I never wrote anything with the real rock there, so I would like to touch on that," she said, promising that her debut album will be a mix of sultry soul and rock.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Is ABC's 'Wipeout' a Rip-Off? (Analysis)

After mediation fails, a copyright case -- in which the wacky obstacle-course competition series is accused of copying original elements of six Japanese shows, including "Takeshi's Castle" and "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" -- is headed to a key hearing.

Mike Weaver/ABC

In 1996'sSwingers, Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau and their fellow wannabe actors debate whether Quentin Tarantino ripped off a slow-motion sequence inReservoir Dogsfrom Martin Scorsese. "Everybody steals from everybody," Vaughn's character announces. "That's Hollywood."

TheSwingersmaxim is true throughout showbiz, but perhaps it most accurately describes one particular segment of Hollywood: Reality TV. SinceSurvivorkicked off the U.S. boom in unscripted, narrative programming 11 years ago, the niche has been littered with more copycat shows and derivative concepts than hit original formats.American Idol, the official U.S. version of Britain's Pop Idol, spawned countless singing elimination shows. History'sPawn StarsbegatHard Core Pawn,Pawn Queensand the rest. Producers of ABC'sWife Swaponce sued the makers of Fox's similar family switcheroo seriesTrading Spouses.

Owing to what might be a knee-jerk reaction against protecting the creativity in a genre dubbed "reality," as well as a lack of clarity in copyright law, many producers believe there is a Wild West mentality in the unscripted world that has given rise to a culture of rampant, unlicensed borrowing. Not helping matters was a leaked 2008 memo from ABC executive vp Howard Davine, urging execs and showrunners to "carefully scrutinize" whether licensing foreign formats was "necessary or appropriate" before going forward with similar shows, especially when they might only be interested in the "general, underlying premise." The memo didn't specifically target reality shows, but it drew the ire of the Format Recognition and Protection Association, an international group pushing for intellectual property rights for unscripted TV formats. FRAPA suggested that producers consider helping themselves to the "underlying premise" of Disney'sHannah Montanaand Mickey Mouse.

Against that backdrop, a lawsuit coming to a head in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles might determine where a court will draw the line on copyright infringement in reality TV. The case, filed in 2008 against ABC by Japan's Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), claims that ABC's wacky obstacle-course competitionWipeoutcopied original elements of six TBS shows, includingTakeshi's Castle,Most Extreme Elimination Challenge(MXC),SasukeandNinja Warrior. The suit alleges that ABC and Wipeout producer Endemol set out to replicate the TBS shows, lifted popular components and even sought to manipulate Google into sending traffic for search terms "Takeshi's Castle" and "Ninja Warrior" to aWipeout-sponsored link. The case, which is being litigated by showbiz powerhouses Stanton "Larry" Stein (for TBS) and Patty Glaser, with former partner Devin McRae (for ABC), has a key summary judgment hearing this summer after a May 12 mediation failed to produce a settlement.

Crucial to the case is which elements of the TBS shows are unique enough to warrant copyright protection (what lawyers call the "protectable" vs. "nonprotectable" elements). In court papers, ABC argues that TBS "remarkably claims copyright protection in obstacles and obstacle concepts ubiquitous in the public domain, such as 'rope swings,' 'mechanical bulls' and 'pole vaults.' " The network points out TV's history of obstacle-course competitions, from the BBC'sIt's a Knockoutin the '60s to ABC'sBattle of the Network Starsin the '70s toFear Factor, the 2001-06 NBC series from Endemol, produced byWipeoutco-creators Matt Kunitz and Scott Larsen. Wipeout, ABC argues, uses only generalscenes a faire, rather than any unique, and thus copyrightable, expression.

Considering the limited number of reality-TV tropes available to producers, ABC makes a compelling argument. Still, when Judge Margaret Nagle sits down to watchWipeoutand the six TBS shows (a good reason to give federal jurists raises), she will likely notice alarming similarities.Wipeout's "Cookie Cutter" contraption appears nearly identical toMXC's "Rotating Surfboard of Death," as do the wisecracking hosts. DittoWipeout's "Hopping Blocks" andSasuke's "Six Jumps." And so on. How many similarities are too many?

Therein lies the larger question beyond the minutia of theWipeoutcase: What aspects of any reality show are subject to legal protection? In a genre where the traditional plot and character aspects of scripted works have been replaced by unique formats, the law might need to evolve to protect the creativity that informs this powerful segment of the TV world.

The Unconquered Nation, Crippled By Bureaucrats

Seems like it's Sub-Saharan Month around here: first Sarah Lacy went to Nigeria, and now here I am in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital and Africa's fourth-largest city. It feels like a boomtown. There are cranes and construction sites everywhere, throwing up gleaming new glass-and-steel buildings full of shops selling computers and mobile phones. The major thoroughfares throng with people making, trading, repairing, unloading, selling, and generally hustling. Don't get me wrong: this is still a poor country. Electrical outages are regular occurrences, the taxis that patrol the city's broad avenues are rusting Ladas, and the side streets are harrowed dirt strewn with garbage, lined with tin shacks, and patrolled by beggars and feral dogs. But I've only seen occasional pockets of the poisonous stagnation I've found so often elsewhere south of the Sahara. This feels like a place where things happen. It's a city and culture that could be on the cusp of a genuine transformation, catalyzed by technology?were it not for a single, gigantic roadblock: its own government.

(Founder Stories) Quora?s Charlie Cheever On Building A Disruptive Knowledge Platform

Last week at Disrupt, Chris Dixon did a version of Founder Stories onstage with Quora founder Charlie Cheever. We learned that Quora is not looking to sell, but we also learned a lot more. For instance, what convinced Cheever to quit Facebook with co-founder Adam D'Angelo was that tried to "imagine a world where I knew everything that I wanted to know, as long as someone else in the world knew it." And that's what Quora wants to build. It's a pretty outrageous goal, which is what makes the startup so interesting.

Lady Gaga Fans Get Emotional About 'Inside The Outside' Special

'This interview was so sweet, I cried. She gives me hope for humanity,' one fan tweets about the MTV doc.
By James Dinh, with additional reporting by James Montgomery

Lady Gaga
Photo: MTV News

As her quest for world domination proceeds, Lady Gaga teamed up with MTV for an exclusive sit-down chat about her extraordinary journey to pop music royalty for the "Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside" documentary, which premiered on Thursday night. In it, Gaga discusses her early career struggles and whirlwind rise to fame, a tale that has all of her Little Monsters abuzz after watching it.

Reactions to the hour-long special have been strong, with an overwhelming response coming in from fans who were selected to attend our special after-show live stream, users on the MTV News site and the social networks in between.

One of those Monsters chosen to visit MTV studios Thursday night was Adrianna, who told MTV News that she was personally touched by Gaga's account of her bullying incident. "I was been bullied all through high school, and I kind of want to thank those people in an awkward way because I wouldn't be the same person, just like Lady Gaga wouldn't be the same person," she shared. "We wouldn't be as strong and confident with ourselves if it wasn't for those people."

Decked out in Gaga-like leather gear, Adrianna explained that Mother Monster is a role model to those who may still endure bullying, and that ultimately she is an inspirational star.

MTV News' Facebook page was also flooded by a wave of Little Monsters who couldn't help but gush about the doc. Users like Jimmy Aleman got emotional watching the special, saying, "I saw it :) It made me cry. She is a true woman." And Rossi Ruska Coles appreciated the pop star's defiant story, writing, "Thank you for this great one hour, the true and real Gaga! Love her and her self-identity!"

Chifi55 also got in on the fun by commenting on MTV News' site, saying, "She's so honest and true ... You just can't believe how amazing and loving and kind she is. She was nothing and became the world's greatest pop star ... There is no one who deserves it more than her!"

Despite the 140-character limit, Gaga fans were also quick to hit us up via Twitter to share their thoughts on "Inside the Outside." Superfan Ryan Lee tweeted, "I cried watching the special. Whoever made it should win an award because they captured the beauty of the angel that is Lady Gaga."

HausOfKels revealed she also couldn't hold back tears, writing, "This interview was so sweet, I cried. She gives me hope for humanity. Her message changed my life + made me stronger. xo #MTVGAGA."

And it wasn't just Little Monsters who tuned in to the MTV special, but also some non-fans, including sayjay41297, who admitted she's been transformed. "I didn't know all that much about Gaga, but now I'm really inspired and I think I've just became a Little Monster. #mtvgaga," she wrote.

Like sayjay41297, RickG63 shared a similar reaction to the doc, but had one minor complaint, tweeting, "Fantastic show, but her interviews are never long enough. Thank you for the show. It was great to see. Now you know why we love Gaga."

Daedalus Touch, a Clever, Gesture-Based iPad Text Editor

Daedalus Touch may be the first truly iPad-ready text editor

Despite the ridiculous amount of iPad text editors in the App Store, none have yet managed to feel like truly iPad-exploiting apps. They may be controlled by touch, but they could exist equally well on a desktop machine, controlled by keyboard and mouse.

Daedalus changes all that. It is a gesture-driven app that could only work on the iPad. It also adds some interesting metaphors for documents and ? despite some v1.0 glitches ? it looks very promising.

The main navigation device is pinching. Your documents are organized in stacks consisting of infinite sheets of paper. To expand a stack and see these sheets, you pinch (or double-tap). To edit a sheet you pinch again.

The other gesture is the swipe. Swipe to move between stacks and pages. When you are at the last page in a stack, you swipe to create anew one and keep typing. You can drag the pages in a stack into any order, which makes Daedalus useful for sketching out stories and screenplays.

Here's the view of a 'Paper Stack', a pile of document pages

The other big features is called ?modeless search.? Theres a search bar at the top of the screen at all times. Enter a terms and the instances of that text string are highlighted in yellow. This search stays active as you pinch out to a stacks overview or pinch into a document. This lets you quickly get to any search term, wherever it might be.

There are other niceties, too. Daedalus supports TextExpander for quicker typing. It also lets you tap in the left and right margins to move the cursor left and right, and you cans switch between day and night modes to change the color of text and paper. There is also a persistent character and word count, and one really neat feature: a built in web browser. This gives quick access to Google, Wikipedia or Dict.cc, a multilingual dictionary site which also offers translations.

And of course it will sync with DropBox (as well as mobile me), and will let you export pages as text, stacks as zip files and even let you open the current document in any other plain-text capable app on your iPad.

There are some glitches. The zooming animations can be jerky, and the app likes to crash when you perform some bulk deleting operations. Given that v1.1 showed up just moments after I?d bought v1.0, and that the developer has already submitted a fixed v1.2, it looks like this part is under control.

Daedalus is available now, for $4.

Rick Ross Talks 'Great Relationship' With Lil Wayne, Cash Money

'It's really like me being at home with my brothers when it comes to Birdman and Lil Wayne,' Ross says.

Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News

Through the years, Rick Ross has developed a strong relationship with Cash Money and Lil Wayne. This year Ross toured with Wayne on the first leg of his I Am Still Music Tour, and he's already kicked around the idea of a joint album with Birdman and appeared on his fair share of songs with the YMCMB roster.

During this week's "RapFix Live," the Boss spoke to host Sway about his relationship with Wayne and his favorite memory from his I Am Still Music run. "The very first night the tour kicked off, just being backstage and me having a great relationship with Cash Money," he revealed. "So it's really like me being at home with my brothers when it comes to Birdman and Lil Wayne."

Rozay and Weezy currently appear together on DJ Khaled's brand-new "I'm On One," Ross' "9 Piece (Remix)" and, of course, Wayne's Tha Carter IV street single "John." For "John," Wayne found inspiration in "I'm Not a Star," the opening track from Ross' 2010 Teflon Don.

"When [Wayne] first came home [from jail] he was like, 'That '"I'm Not a Star," that's one of my favorite joints, let's do something in that vibe,' " Ross recalled. "I'm like, 'Easy.' He actually gave me the track and I was like, 'Wow, this is too easy.' "

With Tha Carter IV scheduled to drop on June 21 and the Colin Tilley-directed "John" clip in rotation and video outlets, Ross is excited for the future. "Sitting in the studio at the Hit factory in Miami, I remember him just playing joints off his album and us constantly going back to that joint and I was just like, 'It's gonna be a hot summer.' "

What's your favorite Ross and Weezy track? Tell us in the comments!

Rick Ross Explains Why He Took Maybach Music To Warner Music Group

'We needed a situation that understood that we could make music at a much quicker rate than a lot of people do,' Ross tells 'RapFix Live.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

They don't call Rick Ross the Boss for nothing! When it was time to secure distribution for his Maybach Music Group, instead of signing his label over at Def Jam, where he already has a solo artist deal, Rozay made an executive decision and took MMG over to Warner Music Group.

"You know, as a boss you gotta make certain things happen and that's what I was able to do. Me, as a solo artist, we're still at Def Jam Records, I have another album or two. But me being an executive, me being a boss, Maybach Music, I had an opportunity to sow my royal oats," Ross told Sway on Wednesday's "RapFix Live."

Rozay weighed his options and in the end needed a distributor that could keep up with his musical output. "We needed a situation that understood that we could make music at a much quicker rate than a lot of people do. And I wanted to put out music at that same rate," he said. "I think it's obviously, since we closed the deal, maybe a little more than two months later, here we are today, Self Made in stores.

"It's constant meetings and discussions and attorney hours. I got great relationships over at Def Jam, so I was pretty much getting my words across. It basically just came down to what was best for Maybach Music and Warner."

With label offers from Cash Money and Sean "Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy Records, the Teflon Don decided to take his imprint over to WMG in February. After getting new signees Wale, Meek Mill and Pill in place, the Boss put the label's first compilation, Self Made, on the fast track. Ross wasn't able to bring his group Triple Cs over to WMG, however. Due to a previously signed contract, the three-man group consisting of Gunplay, Torch and Young Bleed will remain over at Def Jam but will still rep MMG.

The MMG CEO finds inspiration in the speed in which he was able to secure the deal and release Self Made. He expects a busy future for Maybach Music and Warner. "Us executing this album the way we did and the way we have is a great example and something to build on as a company and something to look forward to," he said.

Lady Gaga Dives And Dazzles On 'American Idol Finale'

Mother Monster joined by E Street Band sax hero for a performance of 'Edge of Glory.'
By Adam Graham

Lady Gaga took her performance to the edge — and then took a diving leap over it — during Wednesday's (May 25) "American Idol" season finale.

Gaga, who memorably mentored the contestants earlier this season — advising Haley Reinhart to up the drama quotient in her performance, she told her, "Give them a little, 'I'm crazy and I'm a laugh away from a tear' " — performed her new single "Edge of Glory." She was perched on a mountain top of sorts made of faux rocks high above the "Idol" stage, not unlike Kanye West's volcano-top performance at the 2010 BET Awards. Dressed in a long cape and a bedazzled headpiece draped with hanging chains, Gaga was rendered practically immobile, as she didn't have much space to maneuver atop her spot. A trio of dancers were at the base of the set performing choreographed dance steps while Gaga belted high above them.

Gaga ditched her cape and headpiece after the song's first verse, revealing a Xena the Warrior Princess-type battle-ready bikini ensemble, accented by a flowing blond wig and an oversize cross. Bathed in deep blue lights, she fingered at a piano that was built into her set, and wailed the song's booming, summertime-ready chorus.

She was joined up top by a shirtless male dancer as Bruce Springsteen sidekick Clarence Clemons (who performs the gigantic sax solo at the center of the song) reprised his role on the Nokia Theatre stage. Dressed in an oversize black coat and a black hat, he was barely visible, but his sax lines were immediately recognizable, even if they wavered in and out of audibility.

Gaga and her dancer friend, who were laid out at the top of the set during Clemons' sax intermission, rose to their feet during the song's final chorus. As Gaga sang, "I'm on the edge of glory/ And I'm hanging on a moment with you," they held hands as they inched to the edge of the platform. They embraced, took a breath and then dove off the edge of the stage, landing out of sight, behind a bed of fake rocks. Steam shot up high in the air and the curtain closed on the latest in a long string of memorable televised Lady Gaga performances.

The performance was well-timed to the release of Gaga's Born This Way, which hit stores on Monday and is on pace to become the year's fastest-selling album.

On the same day that Charlie Sheen filed for divorce, his estranged wife Brooke Mueller also filed for divorce.

Mueller cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split and lists the couple's date of separation as December 25, the day that Sheen was arrested on domestic violence charges related to an argument with Mueller.

She is seeking physical custody of the children, but asks for joint legal custody of their twin toddlers-- Bob and Max. She asks that Sheen pay for attorneys fees and pay spousal support. The divorce filing comes just days after Sheen was found with an adult film star in a New York City hotel room that he allegedly trashed, and was taken to the hospital for what his rep called "an allergic reaction."

The estranged couple was married back in May 2008.

Wale Jokingly Takes Credit For Lady Gaga's Success

'I made her whole career,' Wale says with a laugh of his 'Chillin' ' collaborator on 'RapFix Live.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Nicola Formichetti, Lady Starlight, Fernando Garibay, Jimmy Iovine and Wale? While many can claim that they've contributed to Lady Gaga's musical success, D.C. rapper Wale insists that he wants full credit — jokingly, of course.

"I made her whole career," he said Wednesday (May 25) on "RapFix Live" of Gaga, who is the focus of MTV's documentary "Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside," airing Thursday at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on MTV.

In 2009, Gaga appeared on Wale's "Chillin'," the lead single off of his debut album Attention Deficit. Though Gaga had already released her own debut a year earlier, it took some time for The Fame to earn the multiplatinum success it has now, giving Wale the lane to joke about staking claim to her meteoric rise.

All jokes aside though, Wale told host Sway that his recording session with Gaga was one that he'd never forget. "It's one of those things; it's a moment that I hold near and dear to me, 'cause she's probably the most famous person in this generation right now," Wale said. "I don't think she'd probably ever get on a rap record again."

Wale remembered traveling from D.C. to New York after a long night of partying for the session with LG. "We got here and I was kinda faded a little bit still. She was in the studio with this big rubber ribbon in her hair. She was like, 'Marc Jacobs made it for me; it's a one of one.' "

At first, the "cultural differences" were tough for the two artists to get past. In an effort to warm up to each other they made small talk about their respective record deals with Interscope. "It took a while. Once we finally got the ball rolling, it was almost time to go," Wale said. "It was natural though. It's wack when you get in the studio with somebody and it's automatically music time — it feels fake. We were trying to feel each other out."

The MMG MC also remarked that Gaga was a hard worker and laid five different hooks for his Cool & Dre-produced single. "I still got the vocal sessions, you might here another song with her vocals on it," he laughed.

Don't miss "Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside" to hear Mother Monster herself open up about the creative forces behind her generation-defining career. Our exclusive documentary airs Thursday, May 26, at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, followed by a live stream on MTV.com hosted by MTV News' James Montgomery and featuring special guests Lady Starlight, Justin Tranter from Semi Precious Weapons, documentary director Davi Russo, producer Fernando Garibay and Gaga's biggest Little Monsters.

Behold: TechCrunch Erupt In Iceland (Pictures)

As some of you may have read, I was all set to step on a plane on Sunday to head to New York City for TechCrunch Disrupt. Then a giant volcano exploded. But being stranded in Iceland wasn't all bad. First of all, it's a beautiful country. Second, when some localentrepreneursread about our misfortune, they got together and organized an event: TechCrunch Erupt. My friends and I headed over to the event on Monday for conversation, beer, and livestreaming of TechCrunch Disrupt from the U.S.

Reporter Survives 24 Hours in Japan Using Only Vending Machines

This Swedish vending machine lets you pay via SMS. Photo Charlie Sorrel

Vending machines. Who doesn?t love them? And the undisputed world champion of the vending machine is Japan, where you can buy pretty much anything with the drop of a coin or the swipe of a cellphone. But whilst you can buy anything from iPods to marijuana to umbrellas, can you actually survive on the mean streets of Tokyo without once buying sustenance from another human being?

That?s what reporter Tom Edwards wanted to find out, so he set out with two friends to spend 24 hours buying anything they needed from vending machines.

What won?t surprise you is that the challenge wasnt? really a challenge. If you want something in Japan, you can get it from a vending machine. What is interesting is the breadth of choice, and some of the gimmicks. Sure, you can buy cheesecake, ice-cream, miso soup and the horrifying-sounding cheese curry, but you can also buy gold (real gold) and even a hotel room for the night.

My favorite machine, though, is one of the first that Tom and his team encountered. It sells beverages, but it uses a camera to take a picture of you, combines this with temperature, your perceived age and even the time of day to suggest a drink for you. Tom and his friends decide to mess with it by wearing a hockey mask and a false beard.

Perhaps the best part of this entire escapade is a little bit of trivia Tom learned from Takashi Kurosaki, the boss of the Japan Vending Machine Manufacturers Association. He explains that vending machines in Japan took of in 1967. This was when expensive silver 100 coins were replaced with copper 100 coins. This meant there were a lot more 100 coins around, and vending machines switched to allowing 100 coins instead of requiring multiple 10 coins. This made them a lot more convenient.

Lastly, there was one essential thing Tom and team couldn?t find in a machine. Beer. This final point surely marks the whole endeavor as a failure.

How to Live off of Japanese Vending Machines [Maximum Tech. Thanks, Jon!]

Taylor Swift Recalls Shooting 'Story Of Us' Video During Tornadoes

'We had to hide in a room where there were no windows,' she tells MTV News of Nashville shoot.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

The video for "Story of Us" follows Taylor Swift's collegiate character as she falls in love in the stacks of her Ivy League library ... and falls very much out of love in the hallowed hallways of that same school.

Shot at Vanderbilt University near her home in Nashville, the video was complicated not by the tumultuous relationship, but instead by some very dangerous weather conditions.

"There were a few complications. This was actually when a bunch of tornadoes were hitting Nashville," she recalled in Tuesday's (May 24) chat with Sway during "We had to hide. All of us, we had to hide in a room where there were no windows, so that was a little bit crazy. [But] other than that, it was incredibly fun."

The video not only features one very good-looking guy, but also Swift's whole band in varying roles. Who got the best role? Her backup singer Liz Huett, who got to make out with Swift's love interest in the clip. And the story of Taylor and Liz is almost more interesting than the story of Swift and the boy who inspired the song and video.

"We met in a meet-and-greet line. I started out playing small bars and clubs a few years ago, and she came to one of the shows, and I would sign autographs ... and she waited three or four hours," Swift recalled. "And she came up and asked if she could sing for me. ... She sang for me, and [I said], 'You've got to audition for some TV talent show.' And I ran into her a few months later, and one thing led to another and she ended up being my backup singer on tour and making out with a guy in my video."

What did you think of Swift's new video? Share your reviews in the comments!

Apple Defends App Programmers in Patent Dispute

Apple?s legal team has fired back at a patent-owning firm that was threatening to sue iPhone app programmers over usage of in-app payment technology.

Apple stated in no uncertain terms that it planned to protect Apple developers.

?Apple is undisputedly licensed to these patent and the Apple App Makers are protected by that license,? wrote Bruce Sewell, Apple?s general counsel, in a response to Lodsys (.pdf) sent Monday. ?Apple intends to share this letter and the information set out herein with its App Makers and is fully prepared to defend Apple?s license rights.?

The patent firm Lodsys on May 13 sent letters to several iOS app programmers, claiming that it owned a patent related to the usage of an ?upgrade? button, allowing customers to upgrade from a free version of an app to a paid version, or to make purchases within apps. The letter demanded that programmers pay a licensing fee for the patent, or face legal action from Lodsys.

In the technology industry, large companies are already tangled in legal disputes over patents on technologies they claim to have invented or pioneered. For instance, Nokia filed suit against Apple in 2009 for patent infringement, Apple filed a patent lawsuit against HTC in 2010, and Microsoft has gone after Google?s partners offering Android-powered products.

However, with the case of Lodsys, it was odd to see a patent firm shaking down smaller companies for using technologies provided by a larger company.

Apple?s letter said that the technology that Lodsys claims it patented ? a user interface that enables interactions with a user to elicit user feedback ? requires the use of APIs provided by Apple to the app programmer. Therefore, because Apple owns a license for Lodsys? patents, they extend to programmers that use Apple?s technologies, too.

Dave Castelnuovo, creator of the popular iPhone gamePocket God, was one of the first programmers to receive Lodsys? letter. His lawyer David Alberti told Wired.com that Lodsys? claims made against app developers seemed like a ?very far stretch,? because the patents in question seemed to relate to feedback systems on hardware, such as a fax machine, and not technology in a pure software environment.

Lodsys owner Mark Small, who sent the initial letter to app developers, did not immediately respond to a request for.

Pocket God maker Castelnuovo said he was happy to see Apple respond very quickly and publicly to Lodsys.

?It shows that Apple cares about its developers and they are willing to stick up for them when something like this occurs,? Castelnuovo told Wired.com.

James Thomson, app programmer of the pCalc scientific calculator app for iPhone, was one of the first to receive Lodsys? letter. He told Wired.com he was glad Apple was getting involved, but the fight is not over yet.

?I?m just relieved to hear that Apple?s got our backs,? said James Thomson, one of the first to receive the legal threat from Lodsys. ?Of course it?s not over until Lodsys withdraws their claims, but this is a big step. I will sleep a lot better tonight, that?s for certain!?

Swizz Beatz Says Dr. Dre's Detox Will Be 'Worth The Wait'

'Everybody just gotta chill out and let that man do his thing,' Swizz tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum

Good things come to those who wait. So while rap fans continue to clamor over Dr. Dre's long-awaited but hopefully forthcoming Detox, producer Swizz Beatz says to "chill out."

The "On to the Next One" producer told MTV News that he has been in the lab with Dre and together the pair has created about four songs. As of now, Swizz isn't sure which, if any, of their co-creations will end up on Detox, but he has secured one record called "VIP Chillin' " for his upcoming Haute Living LP.

"It's just been a great experience for me, whether they go on the album, whether they don't go on the album," Swizz said of his time spent in the studio with Dre and the songs they've recorded. " 'V.I.P. Chillin',' I took that one for myself, but I would gladly give it back to him anytime he wants it back."

Swizzy is particularly fond of Dre's performance on the aforementioned song. "He's energetic. He's vibing in a way that you've never heard him before," he said. "So even if he don't put that one particular track out, I'm blessed to have the blessing from him to have it for my album."

He does have his favorite, but Beatz says that he is confident with any of his and Dre's songs surfacing. In addition to the work that they did together, Swizz, who has heard at least some of Detox, is supportive of the Doctor and the album's delay. "Dre has amazing songs and I think everything is worth the wait. He's a genius, he's a legend and it's just no getting around that," he said. "Everybody just gotta chill out and let that man do his thing. He's a master at what he does, hands down."

The Bronx, New York, producer has a message for fans that let their impatience grow into doubt of Dr. Dre's capabilities to produce another rap classic. "Don't ever count a master out. I'm never counting a person like Dre out."

What do you think about Dre's long delay in releasing Detox? Tell us in the comments.

Meet This 14-Year-Old Self Taught Hacker

In case you missed it, hackers were busy building new ideas and products at TechCrunch Disrupt's Hackathon in New York last night. Fueled by RedBull, coffee, and massive quantities of junk food, hackers burned the midnight oil last night, preparing to show off their designs to the judges, who included VC Jeff Clavier and Canv.as founder Christopher Poole, and Google VP of Product Bradley Horowitz. We had a chance to sit down with the event's youngest hacker; fourteen-year-old Jake Essman. Essman, a New York native, teamed up with fellow engineers Jesse Leone, William Li, and Feliks Beygel to create buyby, a shopping search engine. BuyBy is fairly simple?you use the site to find where a product is located at a store. So you could search for a 'white t-shirt' and the search engine will not only show you a list of online stores that have that product, but it will also show you stores that sell the product nearby your location.

Eminem Says He Has Acting Gigs 'In The Works'

Film projects have to be 'dope enough' to make him want to put down the mic, rapper tells MTV's 'RapFix Live.'
By Alvin Blanco

Eminem
Photo: MTV News

If Eminem is going to leave the studio for an acting gig, it better be a winner. When Eminem appeared on MTV's "RapFix Live", the elusive Detroit rapper revealed that there are film roles he is currently considering. In the "Pass the Mic" portion of the show, Havoc of Mobb Deep asked the Shady Records founder, "When's your next movie?"

"There are some things in the [works], a couple of scripts," Eminem answered. "I guess it's more so of just waiting now to see how they come together. Obviously it's gotta be something that I feel is dope enough to make me want to say, 'OK, let me put the mic down for a second and go do this movie.' There are some things that are in the works. I guess we'll just see how they come together."

According to Em, rapping and acting have some things in common. "I think Ice Cube said this one time, that if you can rap and you can perform to the camera for singing and things like that in videos, it should be a fairly natural transition," Em said. "I know that everybody can't do it, it's not for everybody. But I did hear him say a lot of times it should be easy because they kind of coincide. You're used to doing that."

Since getting raves for his portrayal of Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith in "8 Mile," a movie loosely based on his own life, Em's acting résumé has been rather limited. He's only made cameos in HBO's "Entourage" and the film "Funny People" since. It appears that besides the fact that he's been focusing on his music, Em's respect for the acting craft is part of the reason he hasn't completely jumped into Hollywood.

"Making that transition I felt like, 'Oh, this might be fairly easy,' and it wasn't," Em said. "It's a whole different thing because you may be used to performing to the camera and you may be used to doing certain things in videos and things like that, but it's a whole different ballgame when the music is off and you have lines that you need to say. Remembering the lines and trying to be natural and what am I going to do when I say this line, it's different. It takes a minute to get used to."
