Amy Winehouse's Death: Family Suspects Alcohol Withdrawal

Unnamed family sources tell English tabloid The Sun that singer quit drinking cold turkey.

There have been many conflicting reports of what caused Amy Winehouse's death on Saturday. While initial autopsy results were inconclusive and the outcome of further toxicology tests will not be available for several more weeks, a report out of England is raising new questions about what might have killed the troubled singer.

Winehouse, who famously struggled with drugs and alcohol during her rocket ride to fame in 2006-2007, was drug-free for the past three years, according to statements from her father, Mitch Winehouse. But the 27-year-old star appeared to still be struggling with alcohol, and unnamed family sources told English tabloid The Sun that it might have been Amy's cold-turkey approach to quitting drinking that did her in.

The sources said Winehouse's decision to give up drinking entirely for three weeks might have given a lethal "shock" to her system. "Abstinence gave her body such a fright they thought it was eventually the cause of her death," the source said.

Click for photos of Amy Winehouse's life and career.

"[Amy's father, Mitch] said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn't do that. It was all or nothing, and she gave up completely ... Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."

The family has reportedly speculated that Winehouse died as a result of a seizure because her small frame could not withstand such a dramatic withdrawal. People magazine reported that it had confirmed the family's speculation about the cause of death.

On Sunday, the singer's U.K. representative, Chris Goodman, told TMZ that Winehouse was found alone in her bed by a bodyguard who had been hired to keep an eye on her. "She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep, and when he went to wake her he found she wasn't breathing," Goodman said. "He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed."

MTV News asked Dr. Sam Zakhari, director of the Division of Metabolism and Health Effects at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, if it's possible for someone to have this kind of reaction to stopping alcohol intake. Dr. Zakhari, who did not treat Winehouse and has no firsthand knowledge of her case, spoke in general terms about the scenario described by the unnamed source.

"People who drink heavily or who are alcoholics and stop all of a sudden may have withdrawal symptoms that range from agitation to intense anxiety to tremors, seizures, convulsions and delusions," said Dr. Zakhari. "In rare cases, it can affect the heart and cause cardiac standstill (heart stoppage), but that's in very rare cases."

Dr. Zakhari said it's difficult to say with any certainty if quitting cold turkey could cause a collapse, because there are many factors that play into that scenario. "You have to look at their nutritional status, family history of heart problems, whether they are using other medications that can interact with alcohol, whether they abuse other substances," he said. "The accurate answer is that we don't know if something like this is due to stopping drinking alcohol because the result depends on such a multitude of factors."

Dr. Dan Hall-Slavin, a psychiatrist and a consultant in addiction at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, agreed that it's possible, but not common for someone who quits drinking to have such drastic health effects. "There is a phenomenon called 'kindling,' where withdrawals from alcohol can get worse and worse over time," said Dr. Hall-Slavin, who also had no firsthand knowledge of the Winehouse case and was speaking in general terms.

"From a clinical standpoint, you never tell anyone who has been actively drinking to just stop until they get into a monitored setting because alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and while some can stop and not experience problems, others with a previous history of alcohol withdrawal can experience very serious symptoms like seizures and a severe withdrawal called Delirium Tremens, where your temperature goes up, you become dehydrated, and you can die in that state."

Sometimes, people who suffer a seizure in private can aspirate the contents of their stomach and die, but different factors can also play in, such as other health issues that result from daily drinking at high volumes and the short and longer-term consequences to the cardiovascular system from use of stimulants such as cocaine.

"The other factor is that alcohol is more toxic for women at lower doses over a shorter period of time than for men," Hall-Slavin noted. "It's partly how alcohol is distributed and metabolized in the body."

Video: This Guy Plays Air Drums That Actually Make Music

I find myself playing the air drums rather regularly when boppin' along to some tunes, and the drum set on Rock Band is by far my favorite instrument, but neither of those hold a candle to what Maayan Migdal has up his sleeve. My air drums don?t make real music. My Rock Band drums do, but they also take up a hunk of space in my room.

Amy Winehouse's Dad Gives Her Clothes To Fans

Friends and family gathered at Amy's favorite jazz club on Thursday night.

Amy Winehouse's father, Mitch, made another trip to the late singer's Camden, England, apartment this week, where fans have kept vigil since the news broke on Saturday that the "Rehab" singer had passed away at age 27.

After greeting those supporters on Monday and thanking them for their kind words and offerings to his troubled daughter's memory, Mitch, along with Amy's mother, Janis, brother Alex and boyfriend Reg Traviss, came by on Thursday to remove some of the singer's private effects from her apartment.

Read what experts say about the negative effects of the type of instant fame Winehouse received.

Mitch surprised some of those gathered outside by handing out a few of Amy's clothes and accessories, including several tank tops, sunglasses and other trinkets, according to The Sun. "There are Amy's T-shirts. This is what she would have wanted — for her fans to have her clothes," he told the stunned fans, as he walked away with a pair of Winehouse's signature ballet shoes in his back pocket. "God bless Amy Winehouse," he said before hopping into a taxi.

The family also carted off some other possessions, including Amy's guitars and her lyric books.

We explore what Winehouse's musical legacy will be, beyond "Rehab."

Some of Winehouse's pals and family got together to celebrate her life at her favorite jazz club on Thursday night. Her divorced parents were joined by Traviss and friends that included Kelly Osbourne and Eliza Doolittle at the Jazz After Dark club in London's Soho district. Also on hand was producer Mark Ronson, who paid tribute to his muse during a concert the night before, when he performed a selection of Amy's songs.

Young Jeezy Says TM 103 Release Is 'Locked'

'It's time to go!' the Snowman tells MTV News of long-awaited album's September 20 drop date.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Rahman Dukes

Young Jeezy
Photo: MTV News

Young Jeezy is ready to go. After numerous delays and setbacks, the Snowman tells MTV News that the release date for his next solo album, TM 103, is set in stone. "It's locked, it's dead-locked. It's time to go! September 20, how y'all want it," he said.

The album — Jeezy's fourth and the third in his Thug Motivation series — first started creating a buzz in 2009, when it was expected to be given a 2010 release. Singles like "Lose My Mind," "All White Everything," "Jizzle" and the Lil Wayne-assisted "Ballin' " came and went, while the album remained in limbo. But on Monday night at his New York City concert celebrating the six-year anniversary of his debut album, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, Jeezy announced the rock-solid September 20 date.

Backstage at a second TM 101 show in Atlanta on Tuesday, Jeezy explained that he wasn't about to tarnish his reputation as an artist just to make that 2010 release date. "One thing you gotta know about Young is I'm three for three," he said, speaking of the quality of his previous albums. "I'm on my own time. I'm the boss — I'm not rushing myself for nothing.

"At the end of the day, I'm not about to give nobody no music to make a deadline, I'm gonna give them something to live and die by. If it ain't classic, it ain't monumental, I don't want to be a part of it. I make hits, man. I make classics. I can't just give somebody something just 'cause it's time. It's better late than never baby, trust."

Jeezy is particularly excited about his new single "Shake Life." The track, which was produced by Lil Lody, samples from Toto's 1978 song "Georgy Porgy" and on it, Jeezy raps about how he was counted out of the game, the war in Iraq and the ills of his former Atlanta neighborhood. "I just put out 'Shake Life,' it's crazy. It's a special record to me," he said. "It's just one of those records to uplift. But if you're worried about club bangers, I got an album full of those sh--s, too easy."

Are you looking forward to Jeezy's TM 103? Tell us in the comments!

Yext Raises $10 Million To Double Down On PowerListings For Local Businesses

Managing local listings across the Web is a nightmare for small businesses, and a huge opportunity for local advertising startup Yext. The New York City company just closed a $10 million series D round, led by Michael Walrath through his WGI Group investment vehicle. Other existing investors IVP, Ron Conway's SV Angel, and Sutter Hill Ventures also participated. Walrath is the founder of Right Media (which was sold to Yahoo for $850 million) and became chairman of Yext last March. This was very much an internal round, but at a higher valuation than the $25 million C round two years ago (which it called a B at the time, but was technically a C). Yext's main business is pay-per-call ads for local businesses. And that is a decent sized business that brings in revenues in the double-digit millions, and the company even entertained some acquisition offers. "We thought about whether or not to sell or do something that could be 100 times as big," says CEO Howard Lerman, "and we chose the latter."

Time Warner Cable Second-Quarter Profit up 23%

The second-largest U.S. cable operator lost 130,000 residential video subscribers though.

NEW YORK ? Time Warner Cable on Thursday reported a 22.8 percent gain in second-quarter profit that exceeded Wall Street estimates, but said it lost 130,000 residential video subscribers during the period.

In the year-ago period, the second- largest U.S. cable TV operator had recorded a decline of 111,000. Total primary service units, a figure that shows the decline or increase in subscribers across video, broadband and telephony services, declined by 16,000 at TWC. The company also reported weaker VOD and premium channel revenue.

Second-quarter earnings rose from $342 million to $420 million on a 4.4 revenue increase to $4.9 billion.

Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt said the company ?continued to perform well? in the latest quarter.

The firm added 54,000 residential broadband customers and 32,000 telephony subscribers in the quarter ended June 30.

Its video subscriber decline for the period does not include a gain of 6,000 users from the acquisition of cable systems during the quarter. Its residential video subscriber count stood at 12.07 million as of June 30. It also had 168,000 video subscribers from business customers.

"Primary service units results disappoint, so the stock and sector may trade off," said Wells Fargo analyst Marci Ryvicker in a first reaction. "That said, it is a seasonally weak quarter in a difficult economy combined with a lot of competition."

Samsung Reigns as Android?s True Champion

Samsung's first Galaxy S smartphone was the company's most successful Android device. Until, that is, the release of the Galaxy S2. Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com

Samsung has its sights on being the king of all things Android.

The company announced Wednesday that its Galaxy S 2 smartphone reached record sales numbers for the company, with more than 5 million handsets sold in the first three months since the smartphone?s debut. And that number accounts for only a quarter of the company?s total smartphone sales over the past three months.

?[Samsung is] claiming that they shipped 19 million smartphones in the second quarter,? IDC mobile analyst Al Hilwa told Wired.com in a statement. ?That is a great number of devices, and assuming that most of them are Android phones, then it is a feat for Android.?

The numbers are only going up from here. Thus far, the Galaxy S2?s release has been limited to South Korea (where Samsung?s global HQ is located), parts of southeast Asia and a handful of European countries. The phone?s U.S. release is slated for some time in August, according to Samsung president of mobile business and digital imaging Shin Jong-kyun. The news was first reported by Korean news agency Yonhap.

?In just a few months the Galaxy S II has led the way in driving Samsung?s unmatched performance in the smartphone industry? Shin said in a statement. ?This reflects the strong support from carrier partners globally, who in choosing the Galaxy S II as their flagship device have reaffirmed the device?s status as a premium, market-defining Smartphone.?

A little perspective: Samsung?s first highly popular smartphone, the Galaxy S, hit the five million mark at around four months, with the lion?s share of those sales occurring in the United States. And after six months of global sales, the Galaxy S hit 10 million units sold.

Compare that to Motorola?s Droid One smartphone ? once considered the most successful Android phone ? which sold 1.05 million devices in the first 74 days of release. Since its first major successful Android phone, Motorola has strived for another hit device. The Atrix? the smartphone-cum-laptop hybrid device which Motorola first introduced in January ? looked to be the company?s next hit phone. But high prices for the accompanying peripheral hardware that made the phone unique deterred customers, keeping the Atrix from gaining any significant following.

?Device makers have always craved being platform owners,? Hilwa told Wired.com, ?which is why they end up developing as much software and tinkering with the UI?s, so that they can move up the food chain.?

And that?s exactly what Samsung is doing. The company plans to unveil a major revamp of its TouchWiz user interface at an event in New York next week. It?s a timely release, considering Apple?s iOS 5 revamp announcement just over a month ago.

Aside from competing for customers with rival Android manufacturers, Samsung is fighting battles on other fronts. Apple is currently suing Samsung in a bitter ongoing patent dispute, claiming the South Korean company is ripping off Apple?s product designs. Samsung quickly filed countersuits against Apple, claiming Apple was encroaching on Samsung?s intellectual property by using a method to improve connections between cell phones and cellular towers.

Samsung?s battles with Apple extend outside of the courtroom, of course. When measured against Apple?s iPhone sales, Samsung?s numbers pale in comparison. Apple sold over 20 million iPhone 4 smartphones in the past three months alone, according to the Cupertino-based company?s last earnings report. That?s over 100 million iPhones sold to date.

A straight apples-to-apples comparison (so to speak) is misleading. Samsung isn?t just competing against Apple and its iOS platform. As one of many manufacturers producing hardware running the same operating system, customers can choose between Motorola, LG, Sony Ericsson and others to get their Android fix. That?s not to mention the other competitors in the space like RIM, HP and Nokia, though the latter two admittedly have a negligible market share.

If Samsung continues to pull ahead of other Android devices in the pack, the company seems to be the only true competitor to Apple?s skyrocketing smartphone success. In the first quarter of 2011, Samsung accounted for 13 percent of all smartphones sold globally, up from just three percent during the same period of time the previous year. That?s more than any other Android manufacturer, according to IMS Research. It?s important to note that rival manufacturer HTC isn?t far behind, however: The Taiwan-based company is just three percent behind Samsung in market share, according to IMS.

There?s also competition on the tablet device front, where Samsung may be putting out some of the best hardware. DisplayMate president Dr. Raymond Soneira recently compared five of the leading tablet devices on the market ? four of which were Android-based, with the last being the iPad 2. Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1 came out ahead, touting the best display out of all five devices, including Apple?s (though it should be noted that Soneira found Samsung?s colors oversaturated to a noticeable degree).

The devices themselves, however, are just one part of the overall package. ?Samsung has done a great job on making compelling hardware, the look, feel and capabilities,? Gartner mobile analyst Phillip Redman told Wired.com in an interview. ?But the total ecosystem is not in its hands like it is Apple?s. It really isn?t just about the hardware. That?s important?but it?s the ecosystem that includes the OS, the application stores, the developers, content?all of that that will make something successful.?

Apple certainly has a leg up on its competitors in the overall ecosystem. The company has approved over half a million apps for its App Store as of May, double the amount currently found on the Android Market. And of course, Apple owns its software, hardware and retail stores. The company also keeps strict control over its app ecosystem, with final say on what is and isn?t acceptable for its store.

So even if Samsung can corner the Android landscape, can it stand up to Apple, a company which seems to have the entire package going for it?

?Samsung and Motorola Mobility will be great competitors to Apple,? Redman says, ?but they aren?t of the same leadership caliber, position and vision.?

Adele Becomes Dance Music Muse At Tomorrowland Festival

David Guetta, Kaskade, Steve Angello talk to MTV News about why they couldn't get enough of the Brit's VMA-nominated 'Rolling in the Deep.'
By Akshay Bhansali

Now in its seventh year, the Tomorrowland Festival kicked off again in Boom, Belgium, this past weekend, and MTV News was there for the entire spectacle.

The dance music event started small but over the years it has ballooned into one of the most popular electronic dance music fests in existence. The Tomorrowland of 2011 had a fairy-tale theme and was made up of 14 colorfully dressed stages, which included set pieces like enormous replicas of mushrooms and trees; two of the stages were even dominated by an oversize skull and a sun. TL accommodated 30,000 campers on its "Dreamville" grounds, bringing the total draw for the weekend to upwards of 180,000, a figure that beat out Miami's Ultra Music Festival. (And what American festival can claim a Church of Love, where couples are encouraged to get some ... quality time?)

But perhaps what set this colossal European festival apart from the others this year was the sheer awesomeness of the talent flown in for it. Blockbuster dance music brands like David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia and Tiësto shared headlining duties with Belgian heroes Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and 2manydjs (brothers Stephen and David Dewaele of Soulwax fame).

And if there was a recurring theme that played out over the course of three days, particularly on the main stage, it was that the dance music world has love for seven-time VMA nominee Adele. The remixes of the British soul singer's "Rolling in the Deep" were as varied as the performers themselves. Adele's a capella vocals were featured in too many sets to count.

Swedish sensation Avicii dropped his "Nothing Without Adele" bootleg; Swedish House Mafia played the Thomas Gold/ Hard Rock Sofa & St. Brothers/ Axwell mash-up "Blow Up in the Deep"; Laidback Luke dished out John Legend's Adele cover; and Kaskade unleashed Feenixpawl's "Rolling in the Deep" remix, just to name a few. Dance music's biggest stars had clearly found their muse at Tomorrowland.

According to some of the producers we caught up with at TL, it should come as no surprise that Adele is up for multiple Moonmen.

"Everyone loved it," Los Angeles-based producer Kaskade told us after his set, "from electronic fans to pop fans to country music fans. It's an amazing song, it's very well written and it's very remix-able."

"She's so special, so different from anything," French superstar Guetta offered. "['Rolling in the Deep'] is incredible. To tell you the truth, it was also kind of inspiration for me when I was producing my record with Sia," he added of the track "Titanium" off his upcoming Nothing But the Beat. "It's totally different, but it's just a mood and using acoustic elements and mixing it with my style of course. I was listening to her record and thinking I would love to introduce a mood like this."

SHM's Steve Angello said, "It's one of those songs. She's an amazing artist and she has a very strong voice and obviously she means what she was singing. If you think about it, most artists out there, they get a record and they just go in there and record it — they don't know what it's about. They don't give a sh--. But Adele, she means it. She's the real f---ing deal, and you can tell."

Chuckie, Hardwell and Norman Doray were also among the Tomorrowland performers documented playing elements of Adele's chart-topping song.

And while Adele-spinning headliners captured the main stage, there were some equally stellar supporting acts among the 469-deep lineup: Richie Hawtin, Afrojack, Wolfgang Gartner, Steve Aoki, Nervo, Sander Van Doorn, Carl Cox, Paul Van Dyk, Fedde Le Grand and Martin Solveig were but a few of the memorable performers over the weekend.

'Breaking Dawn' Soundtrack Could Feature A Castmember

Director Bill Condon tells MTV News soundtrack for 'Part 1' already has about 15 songs in contention.

As with any great tale coming to an end, "The Twilight Saga" will bring things full circle in its two-part finale, director Bill Condon says.

MTV News caught up with Condon at 2011 San Diego Comic-Con to talk about the final two installments of the franchise, and he told us that both movies, but particularly "Part 1," will hearken back to Catherine Hardwicke's 2008 "Twilight" flick, which started the onscreen phenomenon.

"I always thought of 'Breaking Dawn - Part 1' as a real companion piece to Catherine Hardwicke's movie," Condon explained. "Like, everything that got set up there gets resolved here. I think you'll find that there are stylistic and other nods to that film."

Fans will also be excited to learn that some of the same principles will apply to the highly anticipated "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" soundtrack. Condon confirmed that Carter Burwell, who scored the first movie, will be back for "Part 1," which means familiar themes like "Bella's Lullaby" will be in play again for the first time since "Twilight" first hit theaters.

With negotiations for the soundtrack still under way, though, Condon wouldn't talk too specifically about which songs will be included on the album. But he confirmed that there's a good chance that one of the "Twilight" cast's musically-inclined stars will appear on the soundtrack.

We'll leave it up to fans to guess whether that means Robert Pattinson, Jackson Rathbone, Booboo Stewart or one of the other musical castmembers.

"We're just figuring out [the soundtrack] now," Condon said during MTV News' "Breaking Dawn" Comic-Con takeover, adding that they haven't made deals with all of the featured artists yet. "We have a lot of [songs]. We have like 15, I think. "

Tell us who you'd like to hear on the "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" soundtrack in the comments section!

IBM has filed a patent that could provide on possible answer. The patent concerns touch-screen calibration. When you first fire up your device, you go through a training stage, only it?s the computer and not you that is being taught. Through a series of tests, it determines how you type, how big your fingers are, and how accurately you hit the keys.

Armed with this information, it then presents you with a custom keyboard, tailored to your own fat (or thin)-fingered paws. In my case, it might stop me typing ?M?, ?N? or a comma every time I try to hit ?space? on my iPad.

Sadly, this is just a patent application, which in the United States means that it is will be used only to add firepower to lawsuits. A real shame, as touch-screen keyboards need all the help they can get.

Peter Thiel, Ron Conway, Marissa Mayer, Mike McCue, And Vinod Khosla Are Ready To Disrupt

Disruption never stops, especially around here. This year we are holding three Disrupt conferences. We descended upon New York City in May (those are special memories). Next up is San Francisco in September (and then we are off to Beijing in October). Buy tickets here. Who will be there? I'm glad you asked. A few of the key speakers joining us will be Peter Thiel, Ron Conway, Marissa Mayer, Mike McCue, and Vinod Khosla. Thiel, of course, was the first investor in Facebook and more recently a proponent of saving bright kids from college. Conway puts "super" in super angel. Mayer is Google's product veteran. McCue is turning publishing on its head with Flipboard. And Khosla is one of the most iconic VCs in the Valley. We are ecstatic to have them join us and share their insights with our audience. Disrupt SF, is going to be no-holds barred, starting with our Hackathon on September 10 and 11, and then three days of the main event September 12-14. In the mornings, we will talk with the top founders and investors in tech, followed by our StartUp Battlefield where two dozen startups will vie for the Disrupt Cup, $50,000 and all the glory that comes with it. If you are a startup who would like to be considered for the Startup Battlefield, please submit your applications today here. Applications will be closed this Sunday, July 31st, at midnight PT.

Nicki Minaj, Ricky Martin To Rep For MAC Viva Glam

Artists will take the reins from Lady Gaga for the line starting in February 2012.

Lady Gaga will be giving up her spot as the leading lady of the MAC Viva Glam campaign. After working with the company for the last two years (in 2010 with Cyndi Lauper and in 2011 on her own), Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin have been confirmed as the new faces for the makeup line that raises money for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

Martin and Minaj's campaign will launch in February 2012, and they are currently hard at work on the photo spreads for it. The stars are shooting with famed celebrity photographer David LaChappelle for the ads in Miami on Monday, a rep for the cosmetics brand confirmed to MTV News.

"Viva Glam Photo Shoot. Ur gonna GAG!!!!!" Minaj wrote on Twitter. "Can't wait for my barbz & ken barbz to wear this new shade of lipstick! Wait til u see it! Sickening!!!! #VivaGlam2012."

Martin and Minaj join an ever-growing list of A-list celebrities who have helped raise money for the MAC AIDS Fund through the sale of lipstick. Fergie, Christina Aguilera, Eve, Mary J. Blige and Lil Kim have all helped sell the lipstick line, which MAC started in 1994, donating every dollar of its sales to help men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.

"When MAC originally started, it was truly a place for all the misfits of the world, where they could feel comfortable and know that they wouldn't be criticized," James Gager, SVP and creative director of MAC, said earlier this year of the company. "We've always been all about welcoming everyone into our universe."

Britney Spears 'Completely Flattered' By Two VMA Nominations

Spears received nominations for Best Choreography and Best Pop Video.
By Christina Garibaldi

Britney Spears is no stranger to the Video Music Awards. She has so far been nominated 28 times, won four awards and has given us some of the most iconic VMA performances of all time. Who could forget her VMA strip-down in 2000 for "Oops! ... I Did It Again," her dance with a snake for "I'm a Slave 4 U" and, of course, her infamous "Like a Virgin" kiss with Madonna?

This year, Spears looks to add to her list of VMA accomplishments with two nominations, one for Best Pop Video and one for Best Choreography for her hit Ke$ha-penned song "Till the World Ends." MTV News recently caught up with Spears and broke the news of the nominations to the pop star.

"Oh my goodness, I'm completely flattered," Spears said. "That is amazing! Thank you so much for telling me. That's awesome!"

Spears will tackle some pretty stiff competition in both categories including seven-time nominee Adele ("Rolling in the Deep") and four-time nominee Bruno Mars ("Grenade"). But Spears isn't concentrating on her competition, she's just happy to be recognized.

"I grew up listening to MTV. It's just such an iconic thing to be able to participate in," Spears said about the VMAs. "To even be presented an award is just so flattering and I'm honored. I'm excited."

Spears should be excited after such a big year. She released her seventh studio album, Femme Fatale, which reached #1 on the Billboard chart, she's currently on the road for her summer tour, and now she has two more nominations to add to her already lengthy list of awards. So does Spears ever get used to all the VMA nominations?

"Oh no, you never get used to that!" she said.

You can vote for general VMA categories, including Best New Artist, by visiting VMA.MTV.com or m.mtv.com on your mobile phone. In addition, you can get in on Best New Artist text voting by texting BNA to 66333 on your wireless phone. Voting continues through the show, which airs live August 28 at 9 p.m. ET. (Verizon subscribers can vote on all categories via SMS by texting VMA to 66333; standard message rates apply.)

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Amy Winehouse's Death 'Extremely Sad,' Fans Say

'It's a great loss for music,' fan tells MTV News.
By Rya Backer

Music fans the world over are mourning the tragic death of Amy Winehouse, who died Saturday at the age of 27. Throughout her career, the British songstress earned both accolades through her breakthrough album, Back to Black, which earned her five Grammys, and notoriety for her substance abuse.

As many of her celebrity fans took to Twitter to express their sadness, MTV News caught up with some of her fans in Times Square, who had plenty to say about both sides of Winehouse's life. Fan Kristen Brumley said, "It's not an extreme shock if it is drug or alcohol related, but it's extremely sad."

Korde Tuttle also spoke about Winehouse's sometimes-vocal fondness for drugs and drink, saying, "I really hope it's a wake-up call for not only her fans but music lovers in general and people who may have used substances. There is a limit, and the world got to see her reach that limit, and that's really sad."

Despite Winehouse's multiple and well-publicized attempts at cleaning up, fellow Brit Tuesday Holder admitted, "I think it was meant to come," mentioning that the singer's passing "was kind of inevitable, but it's a bit sad. She was so young."

Fans will forever remember Winehouse for her most powerful and lasting contribution: her music. "I think Amy Winehouse brought a new aspect of music back," fan Kate Coyne said, "and she really gave women who wanted to sing blues a voice, and I think that was great."

Holder expressed the same sentiment, saying, "I think it's a great loss for music, especially U.K. music. She was a great artist, a great songwriter, and I think she had a lot more to come out of."

Nakia Williams spoke of Winehouse's unique style: "Her crazy look! Her hair, her big hair, her tattoos!"

Most fans said they hope the mark she made in pop culture through her powerful pipes and signature looks won't be outshined by her darker days. As fan Hector Castillo stated, "I would say just to remember the music she created that's going to be listened to for a long time."

'Harry Potter' Fans Consider Life Post-Potter

'For those who have been so involved and grown up with the series, it feels like a chapter of your life has closed,' one expert says.
By Josh Wigler

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" has been in theaters for a week, kicking magical tail at the box office and basking in the glow of rave reviews from critics. All good things, to be sure, except for one not-so-tiny wound: "Harry Potter" is officially over.

"Wait ... there's no 'Part 3'?" joked a wistful Micah Tannenbaum of MuggleNet, commenting to MTV News on the fact that the "Potter" series is finally ending. "It's a bittersweet feeling. For those who have been so involved and grown up with the series, it feels like a chapter of your life has closed, but at the same time, you're eager to see what's next. J.K. Rowling always has something up her sleeve."

MTV's very own "Potter" expert Terri Schwartz, who was one of our main commentators during the "Harry Potter" World Cup, is one such reader to have grown up alongside the Boy Who Lived, giving her a unique perspective on the cinematic ending of Jo Rowling's magical franchise.

"It is fair to say that I grew up with 'Harry Potter,' so now that the movie series is over, there is an overriding sense of finality to the era that wasn't there when the last book came out," she said. "I definitely feel like I will never experience another pop-culture phenomenon quite like this again in my lifetime."

Indeed, it's a popular sentiment. For many fans, the end of "Potter" marks not just the end of a franchise, but the completion of a massive zeitgeist-defining tale the likes of which won't be repeated anytime soon. There's a sense of pride among "Potter" fans for having been around to witness such a narrative gift, but it doesn't come without a bittersweet cost.

"I think the fans are experiencing mixed emotions," Tannenbaum said. "It's a bit different than when 'Deathly Hallows' the book was released in 2007, because you still had several movies to look forward to. Now what?"

Thankfully, there is a place to turn: Pottermore, Ms. Rowling's online haven where muggles across the world can rediscover the majesty of "Potter" all over again.

"It's a good thing [she] decided to announce Pottermore just before the last film hit theaters," Tannenbaum said. "I have a feeling it will cure any lingering post-Potter depression and provide fans the ultimate online experience. With all the books being re-released over time with new content, fans can experience the series all over again."

Pottermore is still several months away, of course, but fans aren't without options: "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is still in theaters, of course, and judging by last weekend's record-breaking box-office numbers, it's a sure bet that many Potterheads will be heading back to Hogwarts this weekend.

" 'Part 2' is definitely the strongest of the 'Potter' films, so it is exciting to see that this last movie is holding steady to be the strongest of the bunch," Schwartz said. "It just solidifies the fact that this is the most successful movie franchise in cinematic history, which is a title it well-deserves."

"The box-office results are impressive," Tannenbaum added. "I think the fact that 'Part 2' shattered midnight, opening-day and opening-weekend records here in the U.S. as well as records overseas shows the series' reach. It's the fastest film ever to the half-billion mark, and it has only been in theaters for a week! Plus, it just passed 'Star Wars' as the highest-grossing franchise of all-time. Definitely going out with a bang."

Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

BoBook?s Wacom-Powered eReader is Big in Europe

Until you turn it on, the BeBook eReader is pretty good looking

Quick. Name me five e-readers without asking Google. Tricky, right? After the big names ? Kindle, Nook and Sony ? you might remember Kobo, but then you?ll be left scouring your memory. That?s not to say there aren?t any other e-readers. It?s just that in the U.S the market is already dominated by these big brands.

Over in Europe it?s a different story. On a recent trip to London, I saw a lot of Kindles, but the U.K has its own Kindle store on Amazon. Back in Spain, I see no-name readers and Sony readers, and not much else. According to Gadget Lab reader Virginia, the BeBook Neo eReader is another very popular e-reader.

Up until you switch it on, the BeBook looks just fine. When you hit the power, though, the full force of its ugly UI assaults you. Its Wacom touch-panel is controlled by a stylus, and the interface is designed to match. Drop-down menus remind you more of a Palm Pilot than a modern tablet, and the tiny, over-detailed icons only add to this.

If you can get past the fugliness, though, you have a capable device. It can read pretty much any non-DRM text format you throw at it (EPUB, PDF, TXT, HTML, RTF, MOBI, CHM and PDB) plus EPUB and PDF files locked up with Adobe?s Digital Editions DRM.

It?ll also play MP3s, but in this case you might want to stick in an SD card as the reader only has 512MB of on-board storage.

Finally, and a testament to its international credentials, the BeBook lets you view a world map, click on a country and see what e-book stores it offers.

I?ll be sticking with my Kindle for now, as pretty much everything else I have tried is clunky in comparison. If you?re not happy getting your hands dirty and converting foreign-language texts to MOBI format, though, you might take a look at the BeBook, despite its rather steep $250 price tag.

I Don?t Want To Be A Diversity Candidate

Editor?s note: Guest authorBindu Reddyis the CEO ofMyLikes, a word-of-mouth ad networkfunded by former Googlers.
When we were raising our angel round, I had a phone conversation with a prominent Silicon Valley investor who did not have time to meet me face-to-face but was interested in investing in MyLikes because I was a female entrepreneur?aka the "diversity candidate." While it is difficult to say no to money, especially when someone is giving it to you without even listening to what it is that you are doing, I felt insulted and unhappy. I felt that I was competent enough to raise money and build a successful business regardless of my gender, not because of it. In all fairness, this angel and many other supporters of women in technology have good intentions. However, they don?t realize that by calling out someone?s gender they make the system less meritocratic.

DIY A/C Unit Keeps You Cool in a Heatwave

Geoff Milburn's air conditioning unit isn't pretty, but it does the trick. Photo courtesy of Geoff Milburn

If you?re living in the U.S., we don?t have to tell you it?s hot outside. Damn hot. Dog Day Afternoon hot.

Temperatures are soaring in cities across the country, reaching (and breaking) record highs not seen since the early 20th century. The smartest of us are seeking refuge in the air-conditioned Starbucks.

Coughing up the cash for a Frappuccino isn?t your only option. Geoff Milburn of Ontario, Quebec CA created a cheap, DIY approach to the modern air condition: The ?Black Beauty.?

After rooting around for parts in his school?s science department dumpster, Milburn strapped an oscillating fan to the radiator of an old freeze-drying machine. Using copper tubing to funnel cold water in from an outside garden hose, Milburn?s unit is controlled entirely from the inside of his house, with a simple valve attached to the tubing for more efficient water usage and flow regulation.

It?s a huge improvement from Milburn?s original A/C design, which involved a lot more copper tubing, a much larger fan, and a giant trash can filled with ice water instead of the feed from the hose.

Milburn's original air conditioning model was somewhat less convenient. Photo courtesy of Geoff Milburn

Check out Milburn?s page for instructions on how to cool your place down without splurging on a proper A/C unit.

Now all that?s left is to figure out how to cool down that toasty MacBook Pro sitting on your lap.
